I have to say I am having the time of my life as a Zumba® Gold Instructor. I am now leading three classes a week and I love every minute of it.
One of the fun side benefits of being a Zumba® instructor is I get to purchase all this cool “Zumba® Wear” which is fun, funky and functional.
I recently bought a new pair of bright orange Zumba® pants. Today I wore them to my class and as I began I started to realize that they were a little lose. As the class wore on and I continued to bop around they really started to droop.
If you know anything about Zumba® you will know that the participants follow the instructors every move. I tried to hike up my pants inconspicuously but they caught it and some of them did it too! I started to lose my concentration as I was so focused on having the crotch of my pants near my knees. How do some kids wear their pants that way?
Twenty years ago I most likely would have been mortified by this and have not made it through the class. Another benefit of being middle-aged is we seem not to sweat the small stuff as easily. I made it through the class with a few glitches and giggles along with my very accommodating participants.
It was a fun illustration of resilience in the face of adversity. Sometimes we are faced with silly glitches in life. It is up to us if we are going to go along with it or let it annoy us. It’s our choice.
It's way more fun to keep dancing!

Resolution Evolution
We are over half way through January and the New Years resolutions made 19 days ago are either kicking into gear or running out of steam.
There is no field where New Years resolutions are more evident than the weight loss and fitness fields. I work in both. What is also very evident is the drastic drop in attendance that happens only a few weeks/months into the year.
Why is that? Well, if you are one of the those who is grasping to hold onto your resolutions you are probably thinking it is your own weakness and duly berating yourself about it each time you slip backwards even a bit. That doesn’t sit well with striving to achieve a goal. If you lose your confidence in your ability to achieve your goals you will most certainly put this resolution back on the shelf for another year.
What if you chose a different perspective? If you are like me, you have done this a few times and now know undeniably what DOESN’T work for you. That is a gift. I truly believe each time we “fail” we learn what won’t work for us. That always brings us closer to what WILL work for us.
If you use your experience and accept that the journey will not be perfect; how would that change your ability to power through?
What if you changed the RESOLUTION to an EVOLUTION? Think about it. Look to the past as your shining example. If you had allowed your goals to EVOLVE through your ability to try, fail, learn and try again where would you be now?
The reality about changing human behavior is that it will not be a perfect journey. But, it is very, very doable. I challenge you to think like a GPS. When you make a wrong turn, RECALCULATE and continue on your journey. It doesn’t matter where you are in the calendar year or how many wrong turns you take. Just keep moving forward.
We know for sure that if you stop your journey, nothing will change.
